Hi There!

I just learned through an obituary write-up in Klamath Falls Oregon that my G. G. Grandfather was born in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. I would love to find out if there is any information on his birth, parents, or siblings.
His name is Silas W. Dowling Born 1850 in Marietta and died 4-18-30 in Klamath Falls. He was in the Civil War, although I'm not sure where he joined up.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Subject: Dowling research

Hello Brian,

Debbie and I have been working together to sort out our information. I had a handwritten list of birth, marriage and deaths for James on down to John W Dowling who was my greatgrandfather. James who was born in Ballintoy in 1768 according to list had parents named John Peter and Margaret Dowling. James came over to New York state and married Sallie Harris and he named his 2nd son John Peter.after his father. My husband and I visited Ballintoy this past November but we didn't find any one to speak with. I copied the names of the Churches in town and also inquired about the newpaper which would be The Coleraine Chronicle. I intend to see if anyone has records from the 1760s. Birth records were not kept for that early time. Any suggestions you might have I would really appreciate. I should mention John W Dowling was placed where John Peter should have been on the list from Debbie. My handwritten list was written by the grandaughter of Lewis B. Dowling son of James .Do you live in Ballintoy or nearby? We really enjoyed seeing all the beautiful coast. Thank you Shirley Jackman

Subject: Re: a Dowling - Some More Information

How nice to receive such a quick response! I finally have info. for you but as I think I already mentioned I know very little about my father's side of the family (Dowlings in particular). In his later years Daddy did from time to time pass along little tidbits but I think what he knew was pretty limited. Anyway, here goes:

I am Susan Elizabeth Dowling-Reuterskiold (12-13-47). My parents: Marcus Holt Dowling (4-11-09 to 8-31-86) and Carrie Elizabeth Rice-Dowling. I am an only child. My father's parents; Edward Thomas Dowling (est. born 1873 in Memphis, Shelby County, TN, died in Lufkin, Angelina County, TX 11-2-33) and Carrie Cooper Holt-Dowling. As best as I can figure they were married in late 1901 in Houston, TX. They had four children. The first, a girl, died at birth (something I found within the last few years. I don't believe my father was aware of this child.) William Edward (Ed) (don't have birth date but could get, died in Shreveport, LA, 7-4-1983). Uncle Ed did not marry until his 50's; he married a widow with three grown children. My dad was next. Finally, the youngest was Mary Lydia who is also deceased now. She married a McLane and they had two sons. They live in Richardson, TX. I believe William Edward, Marcus Holt, and Mary Lydia were born in Shreveport, LA (or possibly Lufkin, TX).
Marcus and Ed died in Shreveport.

Now for Toheon Dowling, the father of Edward Thomas Dowling. I got this name off a copy of the Death Certificate for E. T. Dowling. Toheon's birthplace on this Certificate is listed as Ireland. His mother's name and birthplace are shown as "Don't Know". E. T. Dowling's wife provided what information there was on the Certificate. The two things my father told me repeatedly through the years were that he remembered hearing the family came from the southeast part of Ireland and the maiden name of his father's mother was O'Shaughnessy.

My dad also talked about his father's parents coming to the states through the Port of Boston and that we had some relatives in Boston. Toheon and wife apparently went to Memphis, TN, and I assume their children were born there. My dad told me they and an older brother of Edward Thomas died in a yellow fever epidemic. I do know there was a sister, Nell, who married a Sullivan, and lived in Memphis as late as the fall of 1942 (this is the year my father's Mother died and I found a sympathy card from Nell Sullivan postmarked in Memphis).

This is about the only other thing I know. Edward Dowling, was born 2-12-1820. He came to the states from Ireland. It is believed he was the brother of Toheon. He apparently went to St. Louis, Missouri. He died there 1-13-1899 (I have a Death Certificate and some other documentation). He married a Mary Hughes. They had at least one child, a daughter, whose name was Annie Dowling.
I also show a last name of Dwyer which I assume was a married name. She eventually became Sister Mary Justine Dwyer so I guess she became widowed at some point and became a nun. She was born 5-17-1853 and died 5-21-1901. My father remembered there were relatives in the St. Louis area so I imagine his father must have talked about them.

Well, this is about all I know. I hope you can make some sense out of it. I
look forward to sometime finding a message from you that you have come across something useful for me. I thank you.
