Subject: Dowlings from Antrim to Oregon

Hi Brian,

I think I E-mailed you a while back. Probably months ago asking about
Silas Dowling in Missouri and Oregon. You replied that you weren't
familiar with the few names I had, but that you would start a one name
file or something.

Well I know more now, but am still stuck and trying to verify my last
info., which leads me to Balling Loy (probably a misspell-Ballintoy)
Antrium, Ireland. Are you familiar with this area at all?

My problem--I think I originally told you about trying to find Silas in
Missouri. Thru his obituary in Klamath Falls Oregon I now know that he
was born in Mariette, Ohio in 1850. His parents were James F. Dowling
and Jane Perkins, with many siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles. I
wanted to know who James F. Dowling's father was. Through lookups in
Washington County, Marietta, Ohio, I am being told that James F.
Dowling's Father was James who was born in Ireland, Antrim Co., went to
school in England, came back to Ireland and then on to New York--married
Sally Harris, in 1809 had 7 children, some born in Seneca N.Y. and my
James F. who was born in Fearing Twp. Marietta, Ohio. As I said before
he was Silas's father and I found the whole family on a 1850 census for
Washington Co. Ohio. The Ireland James Dowling set up one of the first
schools in Fearing Co. and taught for 12 years there among many other
things. It says in the Williams history book for Washington Co. that he
died in 1841.

The reason I'm trying to pick your brain again is that when I joined a
list for Antrium a couple of people said the name didn't ring a bell for
that area. How do I find out if there were ever Dowlings in Antrim in
the 1700-1800's when nothing is showing. They are said to have some
Scottish also. I've found so much info., now I am totally stopped I
think.

Any knowledge or advice you could pass on would be appreciated.
Thank you for listening

Hi Deborah,I had hoped to transfer a couple of charts from my Family Tree Maker program. It didn't work. I too am a beginner on computer.James Dowling from Balling Loy,Antrium Co. Ireland was the father of James Franklin Dowling. James, the father, married Sallie Harris of Providence RI in 1809. He and Sallie lived in Ovid Township Seneca Co. NY. They had 7 children.

Some children born in NY and some born in Fearing Township.Caywood is the community in Fearing that the family settled. It boarders on Marietta line.

James Franklin married Jane Perkins Feb.15, 1838. James and Jane had 5 children. They were Harriet b.1838, Madison b. 1841, Charlotte b. 1843, Lucinda b. 1847 and Silas b. 1850. The 1850 census listed the whole family but the 1860 of which I had page 326 of the census shows Silas at 10 living with a different family. The strange thing is that it shows a 4 year old boy by the name of James Franklin Britton and a 11 year old girl named Rosine Dowling. You need to find page 325 to solve that mystery. What happened to Silas's family and why did they go West? I am not sure you will find any Civil War information because the only Soldiers listed were James R. John W and Lewis who were sons of James Franklin's brother Lewis Blakely. If James Franklin had been in War he would have left a wife and 5 children home. I don"t have his birth date but he would have been older. Silas was too young as he would have been 15 or 16.

The first James Dowling was listed on a 1820 census in Fearing Township He was also described as a school master educated in England but coming from Ireland. I hope you enjoy this whole process of finding family. I didn't start early enough and my Dowling family were all gone by the time my interest developed. Lets keep in touch. I'd like to hear what you find about Silas and how your branch developed.

Two of the Civil War soldiers stayed in KY and one moved on to Florida. My husband and I lived in Hamilton ,Ohio for 15 years and if I had had the interest I could have had lots of sources for information .It is an exciting interest and I wish you happy hunting. Shirley I just found message from Alyssa who is conected to Washington Co Library .I didn't recognize her name in your note but saw that she had answered a question of mine.Isn't it great to have so
many working on this puzzle!

Thank you Brian,
I have ordered the films and will get them next week. Thank you for your suggestion and I will be anxious to see what I can find. There is a possibilty that James and his family came to Ireland from England because in a book of Washington Co, Ohio history James is described as an Irish gentleman with an English education. James taught school in Washington Co. Ohio for 12 years.I have only the book to base that information on and I hope to gather more information this Spring.Shirley

"The Oppenheimer Collection contains both the manuscripts and printed books from the library of Rabbi David Oppenheimer (1664-1736), the Chief Rabbi of Prague. This acquisition of over 5,000 manuscripts and printed books elevated the Bodleian Library to first rank among the Hebrew collections of the world. The manuscripts cover all areas of Hebrew learning studied at that time, from biblical commentary through Talmud, Liturgy, Kabbalah, grammar, mathematics and poetry. The printed books likewise cover all main areas of production, as Oppenheimer both in person and by proxy acquired as much as he could, even embracing editions printed on vellum or coloured papers. He regarded nothing as insignificant, and took particular care with collecting small and ephemeral items in Yiddish. He himself stopped collecting in 1732, and later items considered germane were acquired by various Bodleian curators and listed as "Opp.Adds."

Hi and a happy New Year,

Thank you for the contact; your e-mail has reminded me that I had to amend John Dowling in my tree; I have since done so, all other details are (hopefully) correct. The John Dowling for our family research was born in Clough Kilkenny Ireland and died in Victoria, Australia. The John Dowling that I had originally placed on the tree is not the correct person. Our John Dowling was married to Margaret Power and their daughter Mary Anne married a George Charlton and thus came into our line of research. I am married to a Frances Jinks whose mother Iris is a direct descendent of George Charlton and Mary Anne Dowling. My sister-in-law Janet Hutchins and I have been trying to find records further back in Ireland without much success. Do you have any information that you would be able to share with us? I hope that this e-mail has answered your query.

Hi:

My name is John Thomas Dowling. I live at 18 Clubhouse Circle, Central Islip, NY, USA.

I had done some research on my family, but basically haven't gotten too far. My Grandfather's name was Sylvester Dowling. According to my memory, my father said the name originally was O'Dowling, and they were from Wicklow.

My Grandmother's maiden name was Lawlor, or O'Lawlor (sic), with variations on that, supposedly, her family had a mill called by that name.

Information on the families migration is sketchy, we assume, late 1800's. Lace curtain Irish.

My Grandfather's name was carried by my father and his brothers as their middle name, i.e., John Sylvester, James Slyvester, Joseph Slyvester, Thomas Slyvester, the latter I believe was the oldest son. There were also several sisters, Julia & Mary are two I can remember.

I don't know if they migrated directly to the New York area, or elsewhere.

My Grandmother was supposedly a nurse, but I've also heard in the past that she worked for the Mayor of New York City as a cook or house keeper.

After visiting your site yesterday, I purchased "Broderbund's" Family Tree Maker, version 8. I'm now on a learning curve, I've visited several sites on line. My problem is I don't know if they were married here or in Ireland, when they migrated or other pertinent data.

Sylvester does not seem to be a common name among the Irish. Also we don't know if the spelling of the surname was changed by immigration. Several passenger lists sites I visited seem to allude to that scenario.

My Grandfather, I seem to remember died prior to my fathers birth, or shortly after. I only vaguely remember my Grandmother, she lived in Astoria, Queens, NYC, NY. at 11-49 Welling Court. I remember her wake being held at her home. It had to be in the late 1930's or early 40's.

Can you give me any direction on how best to go about continued research.

Sincerely

John T. Dowling

Brian:

My father was John Sylvester Dowling, born 8/6/1905.

My Grandfather, who I believe was Sylvester, died prior to my father's birth. Information is sketchy. My Grandmother, first name Mary died, late 1930's or early 40's in Astoria, NYC, NY. My memory of her is limited. Per my brother, my Grandmother was a nurse, but worked for the Mayor of NYC, either as a cook or housekeeper. Circa unknown. All searches for either are negative.

Per my father, my Grandmother's family had property called O'Lawlor's (or O'lawler's) Mill around Wicklow area.

My father had several siblings, Thomas, the oldest, Joseph, James, plus sisters Mary and Julia.

Marriage of Grandparents, either date or location unknown.

I set up a family page called "dowling's of astoria, NY". Now have to figure out how to navigate there.

I may try using the given name for my Grandfather of Thomas, since that was the first born name. Sylvester might be Great grandfather's name.

More to follow later as I become more able in the software.

Family Information

Posted by Kathleen McLaughlin on Sat, 27 Jan 2001 -Surname: Dowling, Lawlor

Am trying to locate information on my family who immigrated to the USA I assume mid 19 century.I know that my grandmother was Mary Lawlor(died April 4 1939) from Maryborough Queens county.I've been lead to believe there was a family mill (Lawlors mill)I'm not sure if she married my grandfather,Sylvester Dowling(died May 15 1911),there or in the USA. Although the Dowling name seems to connect in Laois as well. Any info would be appreciated. thanks

Subject: A Thought from a tombstone - Dooley/Hosey

Every so often - as I wander round a graveyard rattling off what I'm reading
on the stone - not thinking about what it is I'm reading and saying -I come
across somthing like this......

and then - when I'm typing up my tapes - I *hear* what it is I read.....it
sinks in....

and while its true to say that I rarely see this on a stone - the few times
I do it always makes me stop and think....

and it should really be everybody's thought about life...we never know the
minute we will end up in the same place as Patrick Dooley.

Jane :-)

Oops - for anyone who might be looking for him - he is buried in the
graveyard in Ballacolla, Co. Laois - between Abbeyleix and Rathdowney....
and a / indicates a new line on the stone.

Brian:

Thank you for the email info it will be helpful.

Martin Dooling's parish was from Balnabanogue in the old parish of Ballyanne
now Cushinstown. Cushinstown consists of Carnagh, Kilscanaln and Old Ross in
addition to Ballyanne. The parish records are not available for 1785 to 1790.
Martin and Michael Dowling are listed in 1825 tithe allotment book as
occupiers of 5acres, 1rod 5perch each in the townland of
Boolachier/Ballycohire/Bolacheer which ajoins Ballynabanogue.

Martin's father was James Doolan, died February 1812 aged 60 years and his
mother was Anty (Anastasia) Doolan, alias Bolger, died november 1823. The
above was taked from their grave stone in Ballyanne cemetery which also
includes the body of Joney Doolan who deceased Feb the 1st 1784 aged 29 years.

The listing in "Cgapel is a typo in the Valuation and should read Chapel
according to Hilary Murphy whom is doing our research in Wexford. He has not
confirmed the location of Johanna Furlong, married Martin Dooling, in
Clonliegh/Cloughbawn parish in 1825 as there are no birth records for
Johanna. Hilary believes Chapel could be the Furlong location.

Keep me posted and every one loves your Dowling Family web site, great work!

My mistake.

The records show the following: James Doolan and Anastasia (Anty) Bolger,
married 1785 were the parents of Martin Doolan. Witnesses to James and
Anastasia's wedding were John Dowling and Thomas Kehoe. Michael was a brother
of James. Michael married Mary Bolger possibly the sister of Anastasia
Bolger. The Bolgers were neighbors to the Doolans with lands in
Ballynabanogue and in the next-door townland of Coolback. Martin Doolan and
Johanna Furlong had at least one son, John, my great-great grandfather,
baptized 1829 in the Cushinstown parish register showing Maria Bolger as a
sponsor.

Other early Doolan/Dowling entries in the Cushinstown register:

1779 Mary Laurence Doolan = Margaret Cullen
1794 Mary John Dowling = Bridget Kavanagh
1801 Catherine Michael Doolin = Mary Bolger
1802 Bridget John Doolin = Mary Cullen
1805 Catherine John Dowlin = Mary Cullen
1805 Catherine Michael Dowlin = Mary Bolger
1809 Mary James Dowling = E. Conway
1812 Darby John Doolin = Mary Keeffe
1822 Anna Patrick Doolan = Anantasia Bolger
1853 Martin James Doolan = Elenor Murphy
1854 Johanna Ditto

1794 Mary John Dowling = Bridget Kavanagh
1801 Catherine Michael Doolin = Mary Bolger

Brian:

It has been some months since we communicated so I thought I would bring you
up to date with my Dowlings.

We determined our John Dowling came from Wexford in about 1860 from the RC
church records in Hamilton Ontario. He married Catherine Dunn on 1865 with
registration stating John's parents were Martin Dowling and Johanna Furlong.
We had a spelling of Freiling at one time which was really Furlong. There are
many, many Furlongs in Wexford.

I hired a Wexford researcher, Hilary Murphy, whom turned out to have written
a book titled "Families of Wexford." Hilary found my Dowlings in the New Ross
area, Ballyanne. My wife and I visited Ireland for two weeks this past
September and Hilary had everything setup for our visit, graves, farm, houses
etc. It was wonderful!

My Dowlings Wexford records start with Michael Dowling and Anastasia Bulger
marrying in 1785. Their son Martin Dowling married Johanna Furlong in 1825
with their son John Dowling born in 1829. We are continuing the research for
siblings.

Thank you for your help and by the way the web site looks great!
Congratulations.

My ancestors were Dowlings. Traditionally they came from County Cork, but I have found with other ancestors, e.g., Derrigs, that they came fromother counties andapparently sailed from Cork.

Dennis Dowling came to the United States with his his wife catherine (Healy) during the famine years. I have included the scarce information I have on the family. I would appreciate any information or advice you might have on the family.

With that I learned the name Dowlearn was spelled as it is above, but pronounced like (du-lin) It also has been spelled DAWLEARN. Patrick Dowlearn is the 1st generation I could find. He was born in 1799 in Missouri, USA then moved to Texas. I can not find anything else about him, but I saw somewhere he came from Ireland. Can you direct me on how to find this out and how to research all of this further?

HE was born on 12/4/54 in Mobile Alabama, USA. I also have a cousin named

both have the same name. I also noticed that alot of the Dowling's have
stayed with the same type of names.

I have uncles named patrick & thomas. My father's father name was Robert c.
Dowling. I will have to find out his date of birth & where he was born.

I will try to get more info to help out. Thanks Kiley

Dear Brian,

I'm wondering whether you might have my gggrandmother or her relatives on
your database somewhere.

Her name was Bridget Dowling b. c1842 in either Queen's County (per her
marriage cert) or County Carlow (per her death cert)
Her parents were Michael Dowling (a farmer) and Bridget Kelly.

She migrated to Queensland, Australia in 1866 aboard the ship "Wansfell"
which sailed from London. With her on the passenger list is an Ann Dowling
(a sister or cousin maybe?)
In 1869 she married my gggrandfather David Tierney in Rockhampton, Qld.

Does any of the above information ring a bell?

My paternal Grandparents, John Dowling & Mary (nee Collopy) immigrated to the USA (probably Port of New York) sometime around 1870-1876 + or -. They came from County Limerick on a "sailing ship". Unfortunately, the both died before I was born. My Great-grandfather was also named John Dowling, and my Great-grandmother was a Nash. In the USA they lived in Painesville, Ohio, and Cleveland, Ohio. Both died in Cleveland. They had 3 Chiuldren; Brigit Thomas (my Father) Jane & John. Anyone know of any connections, or any information. mise le meas, John William Dowling

Dia Duit, a Bhrian: thanks for your message responding to mine (to begin).

I regret that I seem to have caused some confusion, but I believe I can clear it up. Please see the attachment to this message.

Your web site is wonderful, and I will be returning to it frequently. I am still very much a novice with the computer, and I may not move as fast as some can. But I am catching on.

The names of my Great-grandparents I know basically from my Grandfather's Death Certificate. What I know of my Grandparents is mainly what I got from my late Father. My Grandparents both died before I was born as you will see on the attachment.

I have cousins in County Limerick, with whom I have had some communication.

I have always assumed that John and Mary were married in Ireland before they came to the USA, but this is one of those things I cannot be absolutely certain of, but all indications seem to be that they were.

My Father was born in Painesville, Ohio, USA, and lived his childhood and very early adulthood in Cleveland, Ohio. My Mother was of a family several generations in the USA.

As noted on the attachment, I will list my own Progeny later, but for the present time I am sending what is essentially germane to our present purpose. What I am trying to say is "one step at a time" to avoid overloading.

One of my Granddaughters is living in England.

My only visits to Ireland were to North Ireland, including Belfast and Armagh. This was during World War II, and I could not go to the Republic because it was a neutral country. This was disappointing, but I did get to see Emain Macha. Perhaps I will still get to go to Eirinn someday.

I have 2 e-mail addresses; sefeinjd@bellsouth.net & seanathair@bellsouth.net
both go to the same mail box, so either can be used.

Please let me know if you need any more information and/or clarificxation. Also, I will greatly appreciate any information you can give me. Slan agat, John

Hello Brian,
We discovered henry's birth in the Wokingham Parish registers. We knew their first baby, Avis Dowling, died so I sent for the certifcate and was surprised to learn that it was in Wokingham. This sent us searching the Wokingham PR's and we found Henry's father David born there in 1795. A fellow researcher gave me information which led me to Binfield where I found David with his parents Henry and Mary.

James DOUGHLING and ALice JEROME married in Chisledon. I got this from the IGI and then checked the Parish reg's.They had no children in Wilts but these showed up on the Berks IGI for Uffinton.

To go further back than James is a problem. In the IGI there is a James born to a Thomas in Westwood. IF (and its a big IF) this is correct then its likely to be the marriage recorded as Thomas DOLE and Mary MITTEN in 1707 in Westwood with Ilford, WIlts. They had 6 children.

Hope you find it interesting - no link with your family though! Marion

Subject: Dowling La. > Ca. 1848 - 1853

I am looking for info about an ancestor of my wife's that spent some time in Louisiana before going to Ca. Here is the info I have:
Michael Dowling, born in Ireland in about 1833. Don't know how or when he arrived in US. I have found him and his wife, Julia, (born in 1830) on a ships passenger list from San Juan Nicaragua to San Francisco in July 1853 on board the Sierra Nevada. I have followed him until his death in Trinity County Ca. on Jan 18, 1866.
Julia Dowling ("Hagarty", not sure of the spelling) also from Ireland, were married before leaving for Ca. in 1853.
I have found Michael's certificate of citizenship at the NARA in San Bruno Ca. On the certificate it states that Michael filed his intention for citizenship in "Circuit Court of Louisiana" on June 3, 1848. The NARA in Fort Worth found the index for this intention in Index: Volume 1 page 258. However they don't have this Index: Volume.

My current quest is to verify that Michael and Julia did in fact leave from New Orleans to Nicaragua on about July 7, 1853. I can't find any departure lists for the two ships I think they may have been on. I am hoping there is a newspaper from this time frame that I might be able to check. The ships are the Daniel Webster
and the Texas.
I am looking for the Index: Volume 1 that should contain his intention for citizenship record. Also I am hoping to find any marriage record from just prior to the sailing in July 1853. Since both Michael and Julia were Catholic I am hoping there is a church record I might be able to check.
I have checked all the web based lists I can find so, if anyone can point me in the right direction to find any of
this info I would appreciate it very much
Thank You Matt Sandner

Don,

My wife is descended from a Michael Daniel Dowling who came to Boston form Ireland where he married Julia Haggerty. He later moved to California to look for gold. He drowned in his own mine in 1866 in Trinity Center, CA.

According to a U.S. Military roster he was born in County Roscommon in 1833. So I suppose that is a county you could do research in.

I haven't really done much to trace this family line yet.

Hi Brian

Eventually I did get through to your website.

Although we go by the name Dowling, with the variety of spellings, the Gaelic name is actually Dubhlainn as far as I can tell. That's a fair bit different to Dunlaing the Co.Laois name. Quite inconvenient really, because there seems to be plenty of info about the Laois Dowlings but not much about Dubhlainn.

My 1760s Michael Dowling was a Tubbrid man. Whether he was born there or not I don't know. Certainly there are only 2 Dowling graves at Tubbrid, only one related. At Castlegrace a few miles south there are 4. One is a memorial to relatives lost at sea in 1855. The other 3 I don't know who they are, although one mentions a Michael Dowling of Tubbrid.

I had about 1800 Dowlings on BK5, until my old computer got a virus, and my backup went too! That was about 4 years ago. I was so ticked off I didn't go near the Dowlings for several years! My brother has just found an earlier disk with about 1000 names which I plan on expanding on shortly.

Any advice as the whether BK5 is the program to use or not would be appreciated.

I have about 20 A4 pages of Dowling Families which I formed up from Baptism and Marriage details I got through WHS and Hibernian Researchers. I'll send that through to you if you like. I posted it to the Tipperary List about a month ago.

There are some possibilities on the Hearth Money Rolls. Darby Dowly at Rochestown, just a few miles east of Tubbrid. John and Michael Dowell at Neddans near Ardfinnan. When I looked through Laffans book on the Hearth Money Rolls, I wasn't quite up to speed on the variety of ways to spell the name, so I probably missed some others in the area. Even so if I had got them all, there's not much chance of positively making a connection with my mob.

Cheers Mick Dowling

Hi Brian

Following are the families of Michael Dowling taken from my 'big list' of baptisms and marriages. The spelling of the surname is that used on the earliest documentation for that person.

1.
JOHN DOOLING 1789-January 1855 & Bridget Glasseen 1804-January 1855
William. d.o.b. approximately 1822 going by his age of 78 years when he died in 1900
as stated on Victorian Death Certificate No. 255.
Michael. d.o.b. approximately 1826 going by his age of 29 years when he died in 1855

Judy Brien. Priest. John Walsh.
Edmund. Baptised 10 February 1833 Ballylooby. No.1234 & HRC. Sp. John
Keating, Honor Shine. (HRC Jim Keating, Honora Shine) Priest. N. Power.
James. d.o.b. approximately 1840 going by his age of 15 years when he died in 1855
aboard The Guiding Star.

The Guiding Star. John and Bridget Dooling, sons Michael, Edmund, and James, nieces Judith Ahern, and Bridget Glasheen were all lost at sea in 1855. Not 1854 as the Lancefield Victoria monument states, nor 1842 as the Castlegrace Co.Tipperary monument states. Their ship The Guiding Star left Liverpool on 9 January 1855 sailing for Australia. According to The Age newspaper of the 8th of September 1855, the ship was last spoken off the Brazilian coast at lat.16S, lon. 34W, on 12 February 1855. The ship was last sighted at about lat. 44S, lon.25W. in about April 1855 sailing into the 60 mile wide bay of a horseshoe shaped iceberg, in which it must have become entrapped, and eventually sunk.

2.
ALICE DOWLING & Maurice Ahern
John. d.o.b. approximately 1830. Age of 81 years at death in 1911.
Judith. d.o.b. approximately 1835. Age of 20 years at death in 1855. See page
6 The Guiding Star.
Thomas. d.o.b. approximately 1838. New Zealand death certificate gives age of 55
years at death in 1893. Unmarried. Parents names Maurice Ahern, Estate

There you have it. Once I get around to putting all the tree on disk I'll send you a copy. Ditto with the updated family, currently on 25 A4 pages.

The families left Ireland from about 1850, the first arriving in Sydney in 1852. The last to get here were my mob who arrived as late as 1875.

Thanks for your opinion on software. I'll try and track down FTM. I've got Microsoft Access, I'll have a bit of a play around with that also.

Cheers

I am looking for FENTON ? DOWLING. Around mid 1800s from Mountrath.

This is my great grandfather who married ELIZA MCGRATH of Trummery Parish, Mountrath, Queens County.

Her tombstone in Calvary Cemetery, St Louis Missouri USA; states she died in 1896 at age 85. I believe this age is incorrect since she would have been too old to bear my grandfather. Burial permit stated her to be 58 years of age.
This makes her birth year 1838.

Fenton Dowling may have been born ~ 1838 +/- 5 years.

I'd really appreciate any info you can provide for me. Thanks.

Dear Brian,
What an interesting email! I am looking for a Dolan(Doolan) relative and wondered if you could spot any connection.
I did look at your site but your family tree only gave a direct line of descent so I could not see my gt grandmother there!

If I put down all the information I have on her, perhaps you could tell me if there may be a connection and possibly tell me where I
could look next. (I have had no luck with my Dolan research at all up to this point.)

First of all, I was interested in where your family all seem to come from - Mountrath, Co Leix which is very close to Wilmount Co Meath
(see below).

From my grandparents marriage records it seems that my gt grandfather lived in an illegible place which I thought may be Montrath (Co
Westmeath?) or Mountrath or even Maperath (Co Meath).

My maternal gt grandmother's name was given as DOOLAN on one baptismal form in 1875 and as DOLAN on another in 1877.
From the RC Parish records of Carnaross, Co Meath, it seems that this ELLEN DOLAN had married a BRYAN MANNING and was now living in the townland of Wilmount, Co Meath. The records show the baptisms of their 6 children - 5 girls and eventually a boy named Laurence. The eldest daughter was born in 1852 and was called ELLEN MANNING. She married a man who was brought up in a nearby townland of Maperath, Co Meath. They were married in 1875 in Kingstown, Co Dublin at St Michael's Church. (Sounds a bit like your tree!).
There were a couple of other DOLAN's on the parish records but I did not see that they fitted in with ELLEN DOLAN's life.

So there you have it! I would very much like to hear from you if you have any connections - or ideas or suggestions as to where I could
look next. Good luck with your search, Myra Duffy

I had a very brief look at your site last year(last night) and noted you were interested in Irish Dowlings.

My ancestor Catherine Dowling, only info is from Ireland. She would have been born about 1809 and she
married Denis Mcgillicuddy suuposedly from Tipperary.Have you come across a Catherine that might be the ONE.

Amongest my research in New Zealand I have found ;

James Dowling,Dublin, married a Sarah Lord

John Dowling + wife Ellen(Feeley). A Kathleen Dowling was living at same address.Don't know if she was a sister
of John or daughter.

Thomas Dowling died Dunedin,1915
Ruth Dowling died Dunedin 1919

William Henry Dowling born 3 February 1857 died 21 September 1891
Elizabeth Winifred Dowling born 1 January 1867 died 1 December 1913

Best of Luck with your research this year.

Hi, Brian. I recognized your address from your website that a family member recommended. Thanks for your response. Sorry, if I confused you. I don't exactly remember what I posted in June. MICHAEL DOWLING did have a brother William. I try to give as much correct information as possible. I either have the birth and/or baptism records for his siblings.

In regard to my most recent posting, I'll see if I can clarify what I wrote. I'll include what new findings I have.

WILLIAM DOWLING and ANNE BROWN had the following children (of those that I located); LAWRENCE (b about 1831), THOMAS (b 1838), MICHAEL (b 1842), ANNE (b 1843), ANASTASIA (b 1846), WILLIAM (b 1849).

LAWRENCE DOWLING (b about 1831 as mentioned above) married MARY MOORE in Feb 1869 in the chapel of Graigue.

LAWRENCE and MARY's children were (that I have found so far); WILLIAM (b May 1870), JOHN (b Dec 1871), JOHN (b Dec 1872), THOMAS (b Feb 1875), ANNE (b Nov 1876), ANASTASIA (b July 1879), MICHAEL and his twin sister, MARGARET (b Oct 1884), JAMES (b ? 1886). While speaking to my second cousin, she informed me that she heard that Michael had another brother named Lawrence, but for some
reason or other he either was disowned or just went his own way.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First marriage for Catherine Walsh: JOHN MOORE and CATHERINE WALSH married in Feb 1863 in Doonane. JOHN and CATHERINE's children were: PATRICK (b 1863), ELLEN (b 1864), MARY (b 1865), BRIDGET (b 1867), THOMAS (b 1869), JAMES (b 1870), MARTIN (b 1872).

Second marriage for Catherine Walsh; PATRICK DOOLEYand CATHERINE WALSH were married in Nov 1874 in the Catholic Church of Mayo, Queens County. PATRICK and CATHERINE's children were (that I have been able to find): MARGARET (b 1876), CATHERINE (b 1877), ELLEN (b 1881), ELIZABETH (b 1884), MARY (b 1888).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICHAEL DOWLING (b 1884) married ELLEN DOOLEY (b 1881) in April of 1910 in Manhattan, NY.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope this clarifies things. Talk to you soon. Maureen
