    • Parish Records indicate that Thomas is the fifth child.
Siblings: John, Bridget, Michael, Mary, Judith, James and John.
However, Michael Joseph Dowling of Westfields states a different list of siblings with Thomas as the first child followed by Michael, Edward, John, Julia and Kate.

Thomas is probably our first confirmed relative. Michael Joseph Dowling, of Westfields, believed him to be the oldest son but this may be because he inherited the farm. This may be supported by the fact that his parents, by parish records, named there last son John possibly because the first died.

Thomas was baptised in the family home Dysartbeagh on 29th October 1843 to Edward and Julia Doolan. The records of this are poorly written and very likely subject to misspelling. Present at his baptism were 'Godparents' James Bergan or Behgan and Ellen Rooney (possibly an aunt). It is possible that he was born on or just before his baptism day.

Confirmation That Thomas was born in 1843 is deduced from his death registration stating he was 66 years old at death. This would have been fairly accurate as the information was probably supplied by Bridget. The search of the Baptism Register of St. Fintan’s revealed no other Dowlings born around that time that could be this ancestor. A priest would probably have spelt the surname how it sounded and in a broad Irish accent Dowling sounds like Doolan. Thomas's Mother's name of Judy Hogan comes from other Baptism records on either side of this record.

The siblings according to Michael Joseph, were:
      1st Thomas
      2nd Michael
      3rd Edward
      4th John
      5th Julia
      6th Kate

This list is contradicted from the likely list obtainable from the Parish Records themselves. The records viewed show a number of Dowlings but at the appropriate times different spellings are used. Below is an abridged transcript of the records which are most likely to refer to relatives (words enclosed in brackets indicate words that were difficult to read). The last pair of names before the location are the "sponsors" often shown "Sps" abbreviated to "//", these are generally the 'God-parents'.:

Thomas’s father was probably illiterate and not in a position to correct the priest’s spelling. I am satisfied that these are our ancestors despite the difference between the above list and the one supplied by Michael Joseph. This is because:

      a) the names are close to those expected (note here that when Thomas married Bridget Phelan in Kyle his name was shown as Doolin and this is definitely our ancestor),
      b) the records identify dates at around the correct time. If the Thomas born on 29th October 1843 was the same as our ancestor Thomas who died on 7th March 1910 he would have been 66 years old. That is just what the Death Certificate states.
      c) the location for Thomas, and the others above, in the Parish records shows Dysartbeagh as the home location. This is a small place with only a few houses and whilst there may be many Dowlings the odds are against two families of similar names.

In his early childhood Thomas would have lived through the Great Irish Famine, from 1845 to 1847 as a baby and was ten years old at the start of the 1853-1898 Great Emigration to the U.S.A.. It appears that his older brother, John, died young so Thomas was liable to inherit the farm. Otherwise, he may well have considered emigrating. It is possible that he may have witnessed his brothers, Edward(by Michael Joseph Dowlings's list) and John, leave Ireland to become Millers in America. They may have written, if they could, of the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865.

He grew up on the farm at Dysartbeagh. As young man he may well have went to the local pubs and dances with other local people. However, from a town called Kyle near Ballaghmore, a good horse ride away, he met a girl called Bridget Phelan. This may have something to do with a relationship between the Phelans and the Pirettes who appear related to the Dowlings as well.

Figure 1: A Typical Irish Cottage from a postcard made around the time of Thomas' Life. Note the thatched roof and peat tools. Dysartbeagh looked similar to this before modifications

Thomas, at twenty one years, would have had to comply with new laws in 1864 which required the registration of births, deaths and marriages.

In the priest’s house for the Chapel at Kyle I came across the following Marriage Record. It was traditional, as in many other countries, for the marriage to take place in the brides hometown.

Parish Register of Marriages for Kyle and Knock made by Parish Priest P. Ryan

      1875
      November
9th Thomas Doolan to Bridget Phelan.
Mrs Thomas Kirwan & Mary Phelan

I have no doubts that it refers to this Thomas, at this time aged 32 years, even with the misspelling. This may be because the priest at Kyle was unfamiliar with the name or writing it phonetically. It is, however, interesting to note that it is spelt the same way as in the Parish Records. The marriage record was acknowledged by Thomas and Bridget signing with there mark: ' X '.

Further, proof comes the witnesses as Bridget had a sister Mary and the Dowlings were associated with the Kirwans as Thomas’s own brother Michael married Bridget Kirwan. These details are acknowledged as correct by Mrs Anne Kirwan.

Bridget was born in Lackey, a townsland in the Parish of Kyle between Roscrea and Borris-in-Ossory, in Queen’s County. Her father was Daniel Phelan hence Thomas naming his second son Daniel. Daniel Phelan married Anne Delaney in his first marriage and Elizabeth Hyde or Hyle in his second. Daniel and Elizabeth had several children including Bridget, Mary (who married Martin Lawlor and died at the age of 110 years) and a brother who did something wrong and was transported to Australia in a "Coffin Ship".

Bridget had several step-sisters who were surnamed Perette and step-brother named Patrick Perette who was the son of one of Thomas’s sisters (as Mrs. Anne Kirwan states that Patrick was the 1sy cousin of Daniel Joseph Dowling.)

From their marriage Thomas and Bridget had the following children:

      Child’s Name Birth Death Spouse
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      1 Edward 1877 11.10.1950 None
      2 Daniel Joseph 16.05.1878 7.05.1930 Mary Burke
3 John Christopher 1881 20.02.1942 Mary Anne Delaney
      4 Julia May 1885 11.04.1953 Paul Maher
      5 Elizabeth (Lily) 1885 21.11.1971 Peter Gorman
      6 Thomas Francis 1889 26.11.1918 None
      7 Michael 1890 25.01.1966 Mary Josie McEvoy

The children were brought up in the farm in Dysartbeagh. Thomas, no doubt aided by his sons, probably worked a good proportion of Dysartbeagh Townsland’s 438 acres. The farmhouse was built on one level of stone with a thatched roof. Inside many of the rooms would have been communal and certainly the kitchen and living room would probably have been one room.

Figure 2: Interior of a typical Irish Cottage from a postcard of the time. Note the caldron, no doubt containing potatoes, and the cot to the left.

Thomas was probably illiterate as it appears he was unable to correct misspelling of his own name and on some legal documents gave his mark with a cross. He may have taken an interest in the development of a group of people known as the "Fenians", who were fighting for Irish freedom from British rule during the 1860’s. In the later years of his life world events seemed to centre upon the rapid growth of the British Empire under Queen Victoria.

Thomas Dowling appears in the Census of Ireland 1901, for the 31st March, in Dysartbeagh as being the landholder of his own plot (number 12). He lived in a fully built '2nd class' private dwelling with stone walls but a perishable roof (thatch or wood). It had four rooms with four windows to the front of the house. There were ten out buildings. These were one stable, one cow house, two calf houses, one dairy, one piggery, one fowl house, one boiling house, one barn and one shed. The census also showed that he owned the plot next door that was leased out to William Phelan.

In Thomas's house on the night of the census were eight members of the family:
Thomas Head of Family, 55 years, Farmer, Married.
      Bridget Wife, 47 years, Married.
Edward Son, 22 years, Farmer's son, Not Married.
John, Son 19 years, Farmers son, Not Married.
Julia M, Daughter, 17 years, Farmers daughter, Not Married.
Lillie, Daughter, 14 years, Scholar, Not Married.
Thomas, Son, 12 years, Scholar, Not Married.
Michael, Son, 10 years, Scholar, Not Married.

His other son Daniel Joseph was not at home that night.

all were shown as Roman Catholic and as being able to Read & Write. In fact Thomas had learned to do so since his wedding because he had signed the census return. They were also shown as all being born in Queen's County. Erroneously they entered that they spoke English in a column that should have been left blank unless they spoke Irish. Indicating that they did not speak Gaelic to any extent.

On the 7th March 1910 Thomas, now aged 66 years, was taking a cow to a bull along a track in Knockacollis. Just beyond Castletown he collapsed and died. The body was examined the following day by the coroner for Queen’s County who diagnosed the cause of death as syncope. This is defined in medical textbooks as simply a faint which may lead to death.

Bridget died six years after on the 16th May 1916 aged 65 years.
